Pausr vs DeskRest

On paper these two are close: both native Mac apps, both aware of what you are doing, both offering a 7-day trial and a one-time lifetime option. The split is philosophical. DeskRest motivates you with streaks and completion charts. Pausr is built on the observation that guilt is what makes people uninstall break apps.

Windows
Pausr: A Windows version is in the works. The waitlist is open on the download page.
DeskRest: No Windows version exists. A free Windows program with the same name is published by a different company, AppSalt; the two are unrelated.
Stand-up and movement breaks
DeskRest: Movement lives in posture screen flashes and exercise prompts inside breaks, without a dedicated stand-up break type.
Holds breaks during meetings, calls, screen sharing and games, without the screen recording permission
DeskRest: Detects video playback, meetings and calls, and follows macOS Focus modes. Screen sharing and fullscreen games are not part of its documented detection.
Guided RSI exercises
Pausr: Pausr prompts stand-up and movement breaks, but it does not ship guided RSI exercise routines.
DeskRest: You can write your own exercises and attach them to breaks; there is no guided RSI routine library.
Free to use
Pausr: No permanent free tier: a 7-day free trial, then a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase.
DeskRest: Free to download with a 7-day trial, no card needed. Staying past the trial means the lifetime purchase or the yearly subscription.

A glowing sphere held back at the edge of a lit doorway, waiting to enter

A break app is judged on the moments it stays quiet, not on the length of its feature list.

Where the two really differ

  1. What the detection actually covers

DeskRest pauses its reminders during video playback and meeting calls, and it follows macOS Focus modes, which is genuinely more than the older break apps ever offered. Its documentation stops there: screen sharing and fullscreen games are not mentioned. Pausr holds the break through meetings, calls, screen sharing, video and games. If your week contains demos or ranked matches, that scope difference is the comparison.

  2. Streaks against no guilt

DeskRest counts streaks, draws a completion calendar and tracks your skip rate; its own store page calls it gamifying healthy habit formation. Pausr refuses the mechanic on purpose: no streaks, no badges, and a missed break costs nothing. Neither side is wrong. Streaks push some people forward, and push others to uninstall the referee after the first broken chain.

  3. How far a break is allowed to go

DeskRest works in small units: half-minute short breaks, a long break of about three minutes, posture flashes in between, and a Clock Out that locks the Mac when the workday should end. Pausr treats the eye break, the stand-up break and the long recovery break as three different problems with three different lengths, and ends the day with a gentle wind-down rather than a lock.

The difference in one view: the break waits through your meeting or your match, then comes back on its own.

Choose Pausr if

  • Your breaks keep landing in screen shares or fullscreen games, which DeskRest does not document detecting.
  • Streaks stress you more than they motivate you.
  • You want the app in your own language: Pausr speaks 38 languages, DeskRest ships in English and German.

Choose DeskRest if

  • You want the lowest one-time price for a context-aware Mac break app: from $8.99 on the App Store.
  • Streak counters and a completion calendar genuinely keep you honest.
  • You want the Mac to lock itself when the workday ends: Clock Out does exactly that.

Frequently asked questions

Is DeskRest a good app?
Yes, and this comparison does not pretend otherwise. It launched in 2025, gets steady updates from its solo developer, detects video and meetings, and sells a fair one-time license. The differences are scope and philosophy: Pausr covers screen sharing and games too, separates three break types, and refuses streak mechanics entirely.
Which one is cheaper?
DeskRest, clearly. Its lifetime license starts at $8.99 on the App Store, and its own site lists $24.99 for one Mac before discount codes. Pausr is a subscription with a 7-day free trial, or a one-time lifetime purchase. If price decides this for you, DeskRest wins; compare what the detection covers before letting it decide.
Is this the same DeskRest as the Windows program?
No. The Mac app compared here has no Windows version. A free Windows program with the same name comes from a different publisher, AppSalt, and the two are unrelated. If DeskRest appeared on a Windows PC, that is the other product, and the DeskRest alternative page explains how to remove it.
